Sprinkler Repair Basics
Sprinkler repair is the process of repairing or re-routing the parts of your sprinkler system. This could include fixing a malfunctioning valve, or adding new zones. It may also mean changing the height of spray heads and rerouting around obstacles.

In most cases, sprinkler repair isn’t as expensive as you might think. Repairs can range from a few dollars to a couple of hundred. The price will depend on the type of system you have and how much labor is involved. Some homeowners may be able to perform the repairs themselves, while others may have to call in a professional.

Aside from the price, you should also consider the time involved. If you plan to do the work yourself, be sure to check the owner’s manual for instructions.

One of the best ways to determine if your sprinklers are working properly is to check the water pressure. Low pressure means that there is a blockage in your system. You should then take a closer look at the area in question. Generally, a dry patch of grass is a sign of a leak.

When it comes to irrigation systems, you should also have a look at the backflow prevention device. These devices are designed to prevent harmful chemicals from escaping into your drinking water. They are usually installed beneath the ground and can be replaced by most home improvement stores.

Another good reason to get your sprinklers checked is when you notice that there are greener areas of your yard. While green is generally a positive sign, this may also indicate that there is a leak. Also, if there are leaks in multiple areas, it might be a sign of an in-ground sprinkler system.

To repair the system, first make a small cut in the water line. This can be done by using a hacksaw or a pipe cutter. Be careful not to damage any of the tubing or wires. Once the waterline is clean, the water can be retrieved.

Typically, the least expensive parts in a sprinkler system are the connectors. There are also individual replacement parts available. For example, a broken sprinkler head can cost just a few dollars. However, the most expensive part is the backflow preventer.

For the sprinkler to work, the controller must be in good working order. The voltage of the solenoid valve should be between 24 and 28 volts. As with any electrical component, the water and electricity are not recommended when mixed.

Aside from the valve and the controller, the other important parts of your sprinkler system are the sprinkler heads and the waterline. Both should be cleaned, as dirt and sediment can clog the heads and prevent them from operating properly.

Aside from the obvious, you might want to install a rain sensor. This will conserve water by not allowing the sprinkler to turn on and off without it being needed.

Other common problems with your sprinkler system include broken sprinkler heads and low water pressure. You can also check the wires for looseness. Just be sure to reconnect them as soon as possible.
